More than 2,000 teachers have left the profession over the last two years due to low pay, the Undersecretary at the Ministry of Education has announced. The basic monthly salary for a teacher is 300 pounds.Mr. Michael Lopuke says the majority left since last December to join the army. MrLopuke said they are trying to adjust the salary to attract teachers back to the profession.

“The exodus has been very high especially in the last nine months and this is of course quite worrying, and the leadership of this country is looking into it,” said MrLopuke.

Prior to the conflict, many teachers left teaching for NGO jobs. Mr. Lopuke appealed to the teachers all over the country to return to class to improve education.
